Training and Education Center for Veterans Coming to Warner Robins

PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A $10 million dollar training and educational center for military men and women will be built just minutes away from Robins Air Force Base.

On Monday afternoon, Georgia’s governor was recognized for his support of the Middle Georgia community during a ceremony at Houston Lake Country Club. His fiscal year budget 2014 appropriated over $25 million to Houston County, including two projects with Middle Georgia Technical College. A portion of the money will help build a new Health Sciences center at the school and the rest of the money will support the Georgia Military and Veterans Education and Training Support Center or the Gateway Center in partnership with the school.

“We’re going to focus on trying to make sure that military people who are leaving active duty have the opportunity to take advantage of those skills,” said Governor Nathan Deal.

The school will offer classes to help transition military and men and women into working civilians. Deal decided to build the school in Houston County because of proximity to the base, community commitment and land donations.

Warner Robins City Council pledged millions of dollars worth of land on Highway 247 for the project.

“I think these kinds of things will be looked at should we have a BRAC (Base Realignment and Closure) and hopefully the Pentagon will take due notice of the fact that we’re willing to spend our own money to be supportive of the military and their families,” Deal said.

The school plans to break ground on 50,000 square foot facility some time next year.
