Train Like A Champion: Learning the basics of tennis

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Ahead of the Olympic Games, 41NBC presents ‘Train Like a Champion,’ featuring local athletes who share the basics of their sport.

41NBC went to the Macon Area Tennis Association and learned the basics of tennis from Emmanuel Awoyeye.

Emmanuel Awoyeye, a local coach, says there are about three main strokes you need to know: forehand, backhand and the serve. Awoyeye says it is important to have a good forehand.

Awoyeye says to use the lines on the court as a guide when establishing your stance. The bottom of the racket stays pointed at the net and the top of the racket is pointed at the fence.

Awoyeye says to bend your knees, hit the tennis ball and follow through with your arm.

The Macon Area Tennis Association offers net therapy, junior tennis and learning, and tennis apprenticeships. There are also different leagues for those 18 and up, as well as volunteer opportunities.
