Tips to create a home inventory

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – You never want to go through a disaster, but if the worst case scenario happens you want to be prepared. Professional organizer Andi Willis shows us how to create a home inventory of our belongings so we’ll be ready if something bad happens.

Willis says approximately 97% of home insurance claims are for property damage, such as fire, water damage, and theft. If you file a claim with your insurance agency, your agent will want to know what you have in your house. Willis says a home inventory will help you with that.

Willis says you have to make a list, either with a pen and paper or you can use a computer. You’ll go room by room of your home and record what you own. Willis also suggests taking a picture or video record your belongings so you will have a visual recording as well.

You should keep a copy of your home inventory somewhere other than your house. Willis suggests putting it in a safety deposit box or giving it to a trusted family member or friend.
