MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A new affordable housing development in Macon-Bibb County is nearing completion, and community members will get their first look at the homes during a grand-opening event this weekend.

The Tindall Fields Affordable Housing Project, located on Plant Street, brings together several local agencies and investors, including the Macon-Bibb County, the Macon Affordable Housing Fund, the Investment Group Development, Home First and Gateway Realty Professionals. Gateway has been named the exclusive listing agent for the properties.

Arizona Watkins, Broker and CEO of Gateway Realty Professionals, says the project was created in response to the county’s shortage of affordable housing.

“Affordable housing is a crucial thing that we are lacking here in Macon,” Watkins said. “This is going to help solve that problem.”

Buyers can qualify for $25,000 in down-payment assistance, according to Watkins. She says the homes are newly built and priced with accessibility in mind.

Watkins says one feature that sets Tindall Fields apart is allowing buyers to help design elements of their homes.

“Everybody dreams of building a home,” she said. “With this project, they get to choose their colors, their features, the flooring things they might not be able to access anywhere else with other builders.”

She says the neighborhood itself carries meaning for many longtime Macon families.

“A lot of Macon’s legends come from right here on Plant Street,” Watkins said. “It’s a great opportunity for people to plant their roots right here.”

The development team will host an open house Saturday, November 22 from 2-4 p.m. at 836 Plant Street and 854 Plant Street. Visitors can tour the homes, learn about financing options and receive information about the down-payment assistance program.

The event will also include a food truck with free meals, giveaways and activities for families.

Watkins says potential buyers can start the purchasing process during the event and will receive guidance throughout.
