MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Democratic Vice Presidential nominee Governor Tim Walz was in Macon on Tuesday making calls alongside supporters to increase voter turnout across Georgia.

Speaking to supporters at the Triangle Business Center on Georgia Avenue, the Minnesota governor pointed to what he says is a stark contrast between Vice President Harris and former president Donald Trump.

“You saw in that debate a leader with the poise, the dignity, with the vision, with the compassion, with the clarity, and with a lifetime of service to others, not herself, in Kamala Harris,” Walz said. “And then you saw Donald Trump.”

Walz says he and Harris are relying on high turnout in Georgia’s third largest city to get across the finish line in the November 5 presidential election. He encouraged attendees to be proactive in getting those around them registered to vote.

“We don’t hope that we win this election,” Walz said. “We don’t hope that people get to the polls. We don’t hope that things work out in 49 days. We plan to make it happen the way we want it to, and that’s where all of you are at. This is not going to be won in a Twitter fight. It’s going to be by neighbors calling up neighbors on the phone.”

Some attendees say they didn’t know much about Walz prior to him being selected as Vice President Harris’s running mate. They say the research they did on who the governor is as a person and his support of issues important to them earned their approval. Felice Bryant, a member of the Georgia Association of Educators (GAE), says Walz’s support of public education motivated her to attend the event and make calls to help the Harris-Walz ticket win in November.

“He is a great proponent of public education, so I want everyone to come out and have a voice,” Bryant said. “Be about the change. He and Kamala Harris are fighting for a new era, new freedom, new changes, and that’s what we need. We need someone that’s going to come in and be on our side, who’s for the people and all people.”

After his remarks, Walz made a stop at H&H Soul Food Restaurant in downtown Macon before heading to Atlanta for another campaign event.

He began Tuesday’s event by condemning the assassination attempt of Trump and sent well wishes to the former president.
