Thousands of people visit Amerson River Park despite low water levels

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The low water in the Ocmulgee River isn’t stopping people from having a good time.

Since Amerson River Park reopened in May, there have been more than 3,000 visitors every weekend. During the week, about 700 people visit the new park.

Even though the water is so low you can see the sand at the bottom of the river, the Director of Macon-Bibb Parks and Beautification Stephen Lawson says people are still floating their days away.

“The low water actually gives you a chance to see parts of the river you’d never seen. You can see the bottom as you’re coming up. If you’ve got small children, they can get out and play on the sandbars and pick up drift wood. Low water gives you different opportunities to have even more fun,” said Lawson.

Amerson River Park is open Wednesday to Sunday from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m. There’s no fee to enter the park.
