PERRY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – For the past 13 years, the Buzzard Drop has marked the start of the New Year in Perry, becoming one of the city’s most anticipated annual traditions.

The event, created by the city of Perry and the Chamber of Commerce, was designed to celebrate something unique to the community, Perry’s location along the buzzard migration path. Organizers say the idea was inspired by New York City’s Times Square celebration, but tailored to reflect Perry’s hometown character.

“They wanted to do a New Year’s Eve celebration like Times Square, but that was Perry,” said Autumn Cameron, the city’s special events coordinator.

Over the years, the celebration has continued to grow, drawing more people downtown each year. Last year, about 6,500 people attended the event  an increase of roughly 1,200 from the year before.

“The city really prides itself on giving back to the community, and giving the community a place to go, enjoy, and celebrate together,” she said.

Organizers also say the Buzzard Drop plays an important role in supporting local businesses and tourism.

“It’s great for economic development and it’s great for our residents,” Cameron said. “People are flocking to Perry because of the lifestyle and the cost of living.”

The New Year’s celebration includes live music, fireworks and a special kiddie countdown for families. Perry police will also be offering safe rides home for residents who are unable to drive themselves.

The city hopes the Buzzard Drop will continue to bring people together and showcase what makes Perry a unique place to live and visit. The celebration starts at 8 p.m. The Kiddie Countdown is at 9. The Buzzard Drop is at 12 a.m.
