Thomas receives life sentence for murder of Elliot Mizell
WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (WMGT/41NBC) – A Houston County man will get life in prison, without parole, for the murder of 55-year old community volunteer Elliot Mizell.
Friday morning, 25-year old Daniel Thomas went before a Houston County judge for his sentencing. Earlier this week, a jury found Thomas guilty of murder and aggravated assault.
The charges stem from a shooting that happened December 9, 2017 at Mizell’s home on Villa North Court. Around 9am, officers responded to the home after a neighbor found Mizell’s body.
During interviews with Thomas, investigators say Thomas admitted to being involved in the shooting. But he said the shooting occurred during an altercation with Mizell and the gun discharged accidentally.
Detectives determined that Thomas’ story was not supported by the evidence at the scene.
During the trial , witnesses testified that Mizell was known throughout the community as a large supporter of Fort Valley State University Alumni Association and his Fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha. Mizell would often serve as a mentor to young students at the university and to brothers of his fraternity.
