Telfair County Man Arrested for First-Degree Arson

Atlanta (41NBC/WMGT) – A Telfair County man has been arrested in connection with a destroyed vehicle, and charged with first-degree arson, false reporting of a crime, and insurance fraud.

According to a news release by the Georgia Department of Insurance, Insurance and Fire Safety Commissioner Ralph Hudgens said Lewis J. Vaughn, a resident of McRae, reportedly set fire to a 2006 Chevy Malibu on February 3rd. The car was burned off of Highway 149 in Telfair County.

The next day, Vaughn, 53, reported the Malibu stolen and filed an insurance claim with Auto-Owners Insurance Company. The vehicle was valued at $7,500.

Vaughn is currently being held at the Telfair County Detention Center.

First-degree arson is a felony, and punishable by one to 20 years in prison, as well as a possible fine of up to $50,000.
