Teen formally charged in fatal Bibb car accident
According to District Attorney David Cooke, the grand jury formally charged 18-year-old Grant Matthew Hoffman with reckless driving and homicide by vehicle in the first degree in connection with the death of 17-year-old Abigail Hinson.
In a statement Cooke said,
“The indictment alleges that Hoffman caused Hinson’s death by driving a motor vehicle in a ‘in a reckless manner…by driving in excess of forty miles an hour over the posted speed limit at night on Zebulon Road.’”
According to past reports, Hoffman lost control of his vehicle while driving around a curve and then drove off the roadway. The car rolled and hit several trees before coming to a complete stop.
Both teenagers were taken to the hospital where Hinson later died.
Cooke tells 41NBC Hoffman’s lawyer says he wants to turn himself into the authorities. A bond will be set at $25,000. Hoffman will have to obey a curfew from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m. with the only exceptions being school, doctor’s appointments, and religious services. He cannot drive a motor vehicle while out on bond.
Cooke says these are typical conditions the state seeks in a case like this.
The district attorney says an indictment is an allegation and contains no proof of guilt and all defendants are presume innocent until proven guilty.
