Tech Report: Groundbreaking new AI can detect cancer early

Doctors may have a new AI powered cancer screening tool. The Guardian reported that there is an intelligent algorithm able to determine whether or not abnormal growths found on CT scans are cancerous. The AI can detect subtle changes better than a human eye. This technology could help catch cancer early, meaning better outcomes for patients. People diagnosed with lung cancer at the earliest stage are much more likely to survive for five years, compared to patients whose cancer is caught late.

An advocacy group backed by Facebook received a $34 million donation as it campaigned against antitrust legislation. CNBC reports that new documents show that the advocacy group had a massive fundraising haul during the key time period. The money was raised as lawmakers on Capitol Hill were attempting to take on tech giants.

Apple’s new savings account opened in mid-April with a 4.15 percent yield. It’s already drawn 240,000 new accounts. The savings account’s annual interest rate is way above most others. The national average rate is just .24 percent, according to Bankrate.

Geoffrey Hinton, a pioneer in artificial intelligence and a longtime leader of Google’s AI research division, has resigned from his position at the tech giant. He cites growing concerns about ethical implications of the technology he helped create. The New York Times reports that Hinton left after a decade at Google to speak more openly about the potential harm AI could do. The race between rival companies to develop and deploy increasingly sophisticated AI is particularly worrying to Hinton.
