Study Shows College Hill Corridor’s Property Tax Revenue Doubles Bibb County

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Home revitalization in the College Hill corridor in Macon is having an impact on the entire community, and that’s good news for Bibb county residents.

Macon Mayor Robert Reichert and other officials spoke Thursday outside a house that’s on its way to being completely revitalized.

“An older in-town neighborhood that was deteriorating has been revitalized through the efforts of Mercer University the city of Macon, and the Macon housing Authority,” Reichert said.

Property tax revenue in the College Hill corridor has increased at almost double the rate of Bibb County.

A study from Middle Georgia State College shows the increase is from the reduction of crime, renovating run down homes, and saving tax payer money by avoiding demolition.

Josh Rogers, Executive Director of the Historic Macon Foundation, says the quick rise shows partnerships between organizations focused on rehabbing the area are working.

“60 percent over the past 10 years and that’s incredible validation of the partnerships that have gone into making the college hill corridor and bells hill revitalization project successful,” Rogers said.

The good news isn’t only for the city, but for all of Bibb County.

“Other parts of the county may see a reduction in their millage rate because of the increase of the tax value in other parts of the community,” Reichert said.
