Sports Spotlight: From Baldwin Co. to the Nation’s Capitol

Former Baldwin standout Maurice Hurt realized quickly that football should be a priority. He excelled in the trenches of the SEC at Florida and was drafted by the Washington Redskins two weeks ago.

Maurice’s mother, Caroline Hurt, thought her son would follow her footsteps and play basketball. She never dreamed he would one day strap on an NFL helmet.

“When he told me that he was going to concentrate on football it kind of upset me because I thought it was dangerous,” said Caroline Hurt.

Fear quickly grew to passion for Caroline Hurt as her son taught her the game of football one weekend at a time.

“On Saturday mornings we just started watching college football. He basically, on Saturday morning we’d sit here and he taught me the game,” said Caroline Hurt.
