Spirit Airlines coming to Middle Georgia Regional Airport this October, providing nonstop passenger service to Fort Lauderdale

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Planning vacation getaways just got a little bit easier for Middle Georgians.
Spirit Airlines will provide nonstop flights from Middle Georgia Regional Airport to Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International in Florida, taking off beginning on October 16. Doug Faour, Macon-Bibb County Aviation Director, says these services will benefit thousands in the region each year.
“Our data shows that one of the most traveled places to from the Middle Georgia area is South Florida,” Faour said.
The flight to Fort Lauderdale will connect passengers with other destinations like Los Angeles, Chicago, and Las Vegas via flight, and the Caribbean by cruise. Faour says those who book now will save big.
“The introductory fare that Spirit is offering is $49 each way,” Faour said. “So, you can get to Fort Lauderdale for $49.
The airport is undergoing a $22 million upgrade, which will feature a guitar-shaped executive terminal, an extended runway and a restaurant. Macon-Bibb County Mayor Lester Miller says adding the services of Spirit Airlines will do even more to help the community.
“I can think of no better way than to do economic development and tourism than right here at this airport,” Miller said. “And that’s why we’ve invested our time, our money, and a lot of effort to go on here.”
The airport saw no commercial air service for years after ASA and Delta Airlines discontinued service to the airport. With the services of Contour Airlines and United Airlines, the Middle Georgia Regional Airport sees about 15,000 enplanements each year. With Spirit now in the picture, Faour expects that total to double.
“The world’s busiest airport is 82 miles away,” Faour said. “That does make it difficult. So, putting this piece in place is a big deal in reestablishing air space here in Macon.”
