Southwest High School Remembers 9/11

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Southwest High School senior class gathered to commemorate the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.

Students, faculty and the community gathered at the flag pole to remember the sacrifices so many people made that morning. Senior Brittany Plummer helped organize the presentation. She says this demonstration is also about recognizing the local first responders that make sacrifices for the community everyday.

“We’re not just paying respects to those who actually died, we’re commending those who serve everyday,” Plummer said.

Bibb County Deputy Coroner Ronnie Miley spoke at the event to share his experiences. Miley was apart of the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team. The day after the attacks, Miley and his teammates drove to New York and assisted in identifying remains. He says it’s a scene that will stick with him forever.

“It looked like a scene from a movie, it looked unreal. The smoke was so thick it lasted for months and the heat it was intense. It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen,” Miley said.

Following the ceremony, the students released balloons for the people who lost their lives on Sept. 11. Plummer hopes it’s a tradition Southwest High School will continue.
