Southfield Elementary School celebrates Black History Month

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A special program called the “Celebration of Kings and Queens” took place this afternoon at Southfield Elementary School on Bloomfield Drive in Macon.

The program was designed to help teach students at the school the importance of Black History Month.

The children, each one adorned with a paper crown, were treated to various dances, songs, poems, and even a pantomime display in honor of African culture.

“I think it’s vitally important that we teach not only black history, but to me, I think we should teach all sorts of histories,” said David Jackson, Jr., a member of the Georgia State University Student Government Association and keynote speaker at the event.

Jackson also believes that looking back on one’s history can be a great educator for future goals and endeavors.

“I think that looking backwards, at times, keeps us from going backwards again,” said Jackson. “Which helps us go forward.”
