South Carolina man arrested for attempting to scam Jones County couple

A couple in Jones County was contacted by a scammer who convinced them that their money was not safe in their bank account.

JONES COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A South Carolina man was arrested last week after attempting to scam a Jones County couple, according to the Jones County Sheriff’s Office.

A couple in Jones County was contacted by a scammer who convinced them that their money was not safe in their bank account. The scammer advised the couple to withdraw their money and told them a courier would come to pick it up for safekeeping. The couple’s family members realized what was happening and chased away the “courier,” obtaining his license plate in the process.

Investigators identified the driver of the vehicle as Bhargav Patel of South Carolina. Patel was taken into custody on charges of exploitation of the elderly, criminal attempt to commit theft by taking, and criminal attempt to commit theft by deception.

Patel was extradited to Georgia and remains in custody at the Jones County Sheriff’s Office.
