Some Georgia Sheriffs Against Tougher Gun Laws

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – As the debate on gun control continues across the nations, some sheriff’s in Georgia are weighing in on the potential legislation.

The Georgia Sheriffs’ Association is taking a stance and released this statement on the recent gun debate.

“The sheriffs took an oath to support the Constitution and will stand by the 2nd Amendment. The sheriffs will aggressively oppose federal or state legislation, which infringes upon law abiding citizens’ right to bear arms. The sheriffs agree to support any legislation that would effectively penalize criminals who use firearms in the commission of crimes.”

Bibb County Sheriff David Davis was one of hundreds that attended this year’s Georgia Sheriffs’ Association winter conference.

Davis said he took the oath but feels there’s room for plenty interpretation.

“The big thing is to get the weapons out of the hands of people who don’t need them,” Davis said, “I’ve been an advocate for a longtime that people who get a firearms license should have some type of training. Before you get behind the wheel of car, you have to have a license.”
