Sinkhole in Fort Valley Patched Up, Still Needs Long Term Repairs
FORT VALLEY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A sinkhole in Peach County is finally filled after a month of work to fix the problem.
Ground crews in Fort Valley have finally finished filling a big problem.
A sinkhole is a few feet from where fans walk, in front of Peach County High School’s football stadium.
It’s one of many Sinkhole incidents across the nation. In Florida a sinkhole swallowed up this large rental condo on a resort earlier this month.
The problems aren’t always because of nature, sometimes they’re man-made.
Jamie Johnson is the chairman of Peach County’s school board. He says six foot tall pipes under stadium grounds caused the sinkhole that stretches out into the parking out.
“We actually did a minor patch job, so that we’ll be ready for the season, and the company that did it for us said it would last and uphold,” Johnson said.
The patchwork that’s over the sinkhole now is supposed to last throughout the entire football season. Johnson says after that a long term solution will be in place.
“That’s what we are looking at, so we can go ahead and get this done, and we’ll be ready for the season and come back before next year,” Johnson said.
The school board found out about the 80 thousand dollar project back in July. Ground crews weren’t aware of the problem until this year’s heavy summer rain.
“We didn’t know that there were pipes flowing up under near our concession stand and they were running North and South as well as east and west.”
Peach County had to scramble to get funds together, but Johnson says the board had enough to cover the cost and wants to make sure everything is ok.
“We did not want to have any kind of situation where people would walk on it, and we weren’t sure so everything is fine, we are welcoming all of our guests,” Johnson said.
He says one of his biggest concerns was fans safety as they come in and out of the stadium. He say’s everything should be fine in time for the first kickoff.
