Silver Airways Starts Flights Out of Macon April 1st

silverairwaysMACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Silver Airways gives every plane in its fleet a name, and when asked to bring one in for Friday’s announcement at the airport, the company chose one appropriately named “Only the Beginning.”

“As far as commercial air service, there’s very little activity that’s taken place over the last few years,” says Middle Georgia Regional Airport manager Doug Faour.  “We’re hoping to rebuild that and we believe that we can do that.  We believe Silver Airways has the ability to do that, because they’ve done it in other communities.”

The airline will provide travelers six trips a week to Atlanta and another six a week to Orlando, one of the nation’s most popular tourist destinations.

“People have told us in the past that the Macon air terminal was a Mickey Mouse operation,” says Macon Mayor Robert Reichert.  “Well, I got news for you: We are not a Mickey Mouse operation, but we do have connections to Mickey Mouse.”

“There is that tremendous draw for Disney World and for all of the attractions in Orlando,” says Silver Airways vice president, Mickey Bowman.  “We just think it’s going to be a great attraction for the people of Macon to be able to use an easy, reliable service going down.”

Wherever they’re going, passengers can rest assured they’ll ride in style.

“It’s quite a step up from the service that Macon has had here in the past year or so,” says Bowman.  “This is a 34-seat Saab 340B twin turbo prop aircraft.  It does have an onboard flight attendant and a lavatory.  It is an airplane that’s pressurized and cruises at about 300 miles per hour, so it’s going to be a very pleasant experience for the traveling public here.”

Bowman tells us one-way flights to Atlanta will cost around $49, and he revealed Silver Airways plans to match any of Atlanta’s prices for flights to Orlando.

The first plane is scheduled to take off on April 1st, and the deal is expected to last for two years.
