Shutdown to Cause Possible Furloughs for Robins Air Force Base

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The first government shutdown in 17 years could be a possibility, as House Republicans and Senate Democrats continue to debate.

Officials at Robins Air Force Base are wondering what’s next.

Chief Operating Officer for the 21st Century Partnership, Chrissy Miner says the decision affects her community in a major way.

“Bottom line is the leaders in Washington [D.C.] have been unable to do their jobs, and therefore, it results in falling on the back of the federal workforce, and those on Robins Air Force Base. So, essentially we’re all in the waiting game to see if they’re actually going to be able to come to work on Tuesday and do their jobs,” Miner says.

With the countdown to a possible shutdown underway, Representative Sanford Bishop (GA-02) believes there is an underlying issue on Capital Hill.

“You have a group of people that want to limit the size of government who are in spite of the fact that Obama care has been the law of the land now for almost four years…who are still fighting to undo that,” Bishop says, “They’re willing to do anything possible to stop the implementation of any of those policies, even if it mean loosing the full faith and credit of the United States…even if it means shutting down the government.”

Miner says she remains “hopeful that the leadership in Washington [D.C.] will find resolution to this and that this is no longer carried on the backs of the federal workforce especially here at Robins Air Force Base.”

Miner adds if a shutdown does happen, employees will be on furlough until the government is funded again.
