Senators Approve Macon-Bibb Consolidation Bill

ATLANTA, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The long-awaited Macon-Bibb County Consolidation Bill passed another hurdle at the Capitol today. The State Senate approved the proposal.

State Senator Cecil Staton says, he and State Senator Miriam Paris made minor changes, including adjustments to the district lines. Also, instead of an appointed police chief and elected sheriff, the only top law enforcer will be the sheriff voted in by the people.

“I think if the goal is a smaller governement, a more efficient government, a unified government, and one that taxpayers can feel good about, then we’ve made a major, major step forward,” says State Senator Staton.

If the State House of Representatives approves the senators’ changes, then the bill will be given to Governor Nathan Deal to sign. Voters will make a decision on the legislation on the July 31st ballot.
