Sen. Brown Talks Macon-Bibb Consolidation

Senator Robert Brown first offered a consolidation proposal back in 1996. The plan never gained steam, but now Brown’s new restructuring plan for Macon and BibbCounty‘s Governments could become a reality and says his plan focuses on people, not businesses.

“For the everyday tax payer, within four years after implementing this plan, your cost of government should go down by twenty percent,” said Brown.

Senator Robert Brown believes consolidating Macon and BibbCounty‘s governments will create a more efficient and cost effective operation of government. Brown’s proposed bill would eliminate the current format of 15 city council members and 5 county commissioners and go down to just 11 council members and a mayor. A move that Macon city councilman Rick Hutto says is the right one.

“It just is impossible to me to think how anybody could be against saving 20 percent of our current costs. We can barely pay for one government why should we possibly pay for two,” said Hutto.
