Second-Half Goals Power GC Soccer to Win at UNCP, 2-0

PEMBROKE, N.C. (GCSU RELEASE) – Second-half goals by Ashley Veilleux (Monroe, Ga.) and Rebekah Autry (Winder, Ga.) helped the Georgia College soccer team (6-5-1, 3-3-1 PBC) to a 2-0 win Saturday at UNC Pembroke (5-6, 3-4 PBC).

A scoreless first half was dominated by the Bobcats, to the tune of a 13-3 shot advantage.

Veilleux broke the scoreless tie in the 71st minute, taking a short pass from Autry and firing it to the back of the net.

Just under seven minutes later, Autry pushed it further out of reach with a long blast to the upper right corner. The goal was her second of the season, and fourth of her career.

The Bobcats now own a three-match streak without a loss, tying their longest of the season. Veilleux’s goal gives her sole possession of third place in school history with 14 career goals.

Freshman netminder Jessica Catapano (Alpharetta, Ga.) recorded the shutout without a single save. It was the second shutout of Catapano’s career. The shot advantage wound up at 22-4 for the Bobcats.

The victory gives the Bobcats 10 points in the Peach Belt Conference (PBC) standings, good enough for fifth place. The top eight squads advance to the PBC Tournament, with the top four hosting a first-round matchup.

The Bobcats are back in action Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 4 p.m., traveling to Newberry College, Georgia College’s final non-conference matchup of the season.
