Search for missing Virginia high school coach turns into manhunt after child sex crime charges

A multi-day search for a missing high school football coach has shifted into a manhunt.

(NBC)- A multi-day search for a missing high school football coach has shifted into a manhunt, after Virginia State Police announced that 46-year-old Travis Turner is now wanted on serious child exploitation charges.

State Police say Turner is accused of possessing child pornography and using a computer to solicit a minor. Investigators say agents went to his home last Thursday in the early stages of the case, but learned he was not there.

Turner was first treated as a missing person, with authorities deploying drones and K-9 units to search for him. His disappearance rattled the Wise County community, where Turner was a beloved figure and head coach of an undefeated football team.

In a statement, Turner’s family urged restraint, saying they “remain prayerful for his safe return,” and that any allegations should be handled through the legal system, not “speculation or rumor.”

The Wise County School District confirmed that a staff member already on administrative leave is the subject of the charges, and said it is cooperating with law enforcement.

Local leaders say the situation has deeply shaken the town. “We’re all family and the community’s just been going through heartache,” the town manager said.

Despite the turmoil, Turner’s team played last weekend—before the charges were announced—and won, securing a spot in the regional championship.

The Virginia State Police is asking anyone with information about Turner’s whereabouts to come forward as the search continues.
