Sandersville Man Making a Name for Himself in Country Music

SANDERSVILLE, GeorChuck Hancockgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Texas-born singer/songwriter Chuck Hancock is as country as they come.

Unlike the artists you hear on the radio every day like Luke Bryan and even Macon’s own Jason Aldean, Hancock’s music takes you back before that pop sound took over country music.

The International Country Gospel Music Association’s Gold Cross Male Artist of the Year’s most recent single, “They Don’t Stay Little Long Enough’, currently sits at No. 21 on Power Source Magazine’s country charts, ahead of songs by such artists as Eric Church, Bryan, and Aldean.

“That song came from just watching my children teach their little children how to play ball and how to hunt, and I said, ‘It hasn’t been that long since I was teaching them the same thing,'” says Hancock.  “Time really goes by when your children are growing up and then all of a sudden they’re grown and gone.”

The father of six moved to Sandersville in 1987.  That’s when he took a break from playing music.

“My partner, Charles Turner, and myself bought a company called Jet Food Stores,” says Hancock.  “You may be familiar–we’ve got a couple in Macon.  We’re a 52-store chain of convenience stores.”

As a full-time businessman, Hancock had to hang up his guitar for a little while.

His wife, Cynthia, recently decided to start up Branding Iron Cafe and Grill in Sandersville.  All the help the Hancocks are now receiving from family and friends in both their business ventures has allowed Chuck to get back to what he loves most–writing, and playing music.

“You never know from one day to the next what’s going to happen,” says Cynthia Hancock.  “So many people are coming into our lives now, and he’s really getting to enjoy his, and that’s what’s important.”

“It keeps us apart a lot,” Chuck interrupts.  “I mean, I’m on the road a good bit now.”

“But he gets to enjoy what he loves doing,” Cynthia continues.  “And I’m all for it and I support it.”

Chuck smiles.

“If you’re going to leave something behind, that’s probably what I’ll have to leave behind is just my music,” says Chuck.

Hancock is nominated for two more awards in the upcoming International Country Music Association Awards.  Those are for Male Vocalist and Songwriter of the Year.
