Salvation Army opens cooling center during heat wave
The center opened Monday at noon and will remain open any time the heat index exceeds 100 degrees, according to Social Services Director Dr. Latresa White.

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – The Salvation Army has opened a cooling center in Macon to provide relief during this week’s dangerous heat.
The center opened Monday at noon and will remain open any time the heat index exceeds 100 degrees, according to Social Services Director Dr. Latresa White. Current forecasts suggest elevated heat index levels through at least Friday.
Both dorms at the facility will be open to accommodate individuals in need of relief. Guests must sign in upon arrival and may stay until weather conditions return to a safe range. Depending on the temperature, the center may operate during evening and overnight hours.
Guests will receive a sack lunch or a hot meal, depending on the time of day. Meals are served during breakfast, lunch and dinner with organized groups. Coolers filled with water and ice will also be available throughout the day.
Due to the presence of children in the shelter, individuals listed as sex offenders cannot be accommodated.
The Salvation Army is accepting monetary donations, as well as water, magazines, board games, snacks and other supplies to help people stay comfortable while they wait out the heat.
The cooling center is located at 1955 Broadway in Macon.
