Salt Trucks Treat Bibb County Bridges
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Macon-Bibb County Public Works Department continued covering roadways, Wednesday.
The public works director, Richard Powell said work crews drove around town assessing roads and bridges to see if the roadways they had already treated, on Tuesday, needed additional salt and Pea gravel mixture on Wednesday.
Powell says he is concerned that those roads are now frozen. He added, bridges are expected to freeze over again as the temperature drops.
“Most of our bridges here in town are made out of concrete and the concrete seems to freeze faster than the asphalt roads,” said Powell. “We don’t have enough salt or the manpower to do all of the roads in the county. So, we start with all the bridges to make sure those are safe to travel.”
Powell says even though the snow appears to be letting up some, snow and sleet melts during the day and freezes at night creating the icy roads.
He says the danger for drivers is they cannot see the black ice patches on the asphalt at night.
The Georgia State Patrol says if you do not have to get out on the roadways, do not.
