(CNN)- Another deadly and intense aerial assault shook Ukraine early Sunday as Russia launched more than 600 drones and dozens of missiles, rattling nerves across Europe.

Poland scrambled military jets in response, just days after previous Russian incursions into its airspace. Moscow has denied those violations, dismissing them as provocations.

Inside Ukraine, the strikes left at least four people dead, including a 12-year-old girl in Kyiv. Civilian neighborhoods were hit hard, with homes destroyed and families displaced.

“I have three boys so they’re still alive and smiling today. I don’t know, it’s a miracle really … it’s a miracle for me that I’m alive. But this is our reality — our neighbor, crazy neighbor from Russia, still fighting with us,” said one Ukrainian man whose home was reduced to rubble.

The relentless barrage highlights how far both sides remain from any ceasefire, and how elusive peace continues to be in the grinding war.
