Runners celebrate 39th annual Macon Labor Day Road Race

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – You’re up early, and laboring doesn’t sound so nice.

“You know because a lot of folks could be asleep,” said runner Brandon Wimberly.

“It was rough, but it feels good now that I’m done,” said 10K winner Melissa Jones.

But these runners wanted to work up a sweat.

“We never miss labor day,” said runner Rusty Boland.

The 39th annual Macon Labor Day Road Race took over the streets Monday morning.

“This is my first one, so, this is like my fifth, I’m just trying to beat my own time,” said Wimberly.

The finish line welcomed runners with some music and a drink.

A couple of runners made the labor seem easy.

“I just like coming out here with big crowds like this, and it’s supporting a national holiday like labor day,” said 10K winner Alan Black.

Black won the 10K race for the men–he’s won either the 5k or 10k for the last fifteen years.

“Being with a great place and people that’s something I like to do,” said Black.

Melissa Jones won the 10k for the women.

“I was chasing another woman for the first half of the race and I finally caught her after the hill, after mile 3 and I kept running as hard as I could trying to make sure she didn’t get me,” said Jones.

Labor Day may be a day off work for most, and turns out, you can run the labor right out of it.

“Beautiful weather, couldn’t beat it,” said Boland.
