Ronald McDonald House Collects Thousands in Recycled Tabs

It costs more than $1,000 a day to run The Ronald McDonald House of Central Georgia, but workers found an easy eco-friendly way to reduce that cost.

The house collects pull tabs to off set bills.

Development Director, Julie Wilkerson, says, “From soda cans to soup cans…whatever you can pop a tab off of.”

Thousands of the tabs go a long way. According to Wilkerson, the Ronald McDonald House of Central Georgia receives around $8,000 a year for recycling them.

At any given time 13 different families and anywhere from 25 to 40 people are living at the house, which makes costs add up quickly.

“They live here so they need air conditioning, and heat, and bed linings. They wash their clothes here,” says Wilkerson.

Collecting the tabs and recycling them gives the house money to keep the pantry stocked and help families live more comfortably.
