Rolling Thunder partners with Houston County Schools raise POW/MIA flags
Students in Houston County will now see POW/MIA flags flying at their schools as a reminder of veterans who never came home.
HOUSTON COUNTY, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Rolling Thunder Georgia 3, a nonprofit group that supports veterans, is working with the Houston County School District to raise POW/MIA flags at all 41 schools.
The first ceremony was held Wednesday morning at Thompson Middle School in Centerville. Each flag is dedicated to a soldier who is still missing in action.
Andy Cannon, a member of Rolling Thunder Georgia 3, said the effort is meant to teach students and the community about the flag’s meaning.
“The purpose of our visit here today is to educate the public and educate some students about how important this POW Flag is to their veterans, their families and our community,” Cannon said. “There are hundreds of veterans who lost loved ones in Korea and Vietnam and this flag is a symbol of our Government’s commitment to keep up the search and never forget those who fought so bravely for our country.”
The ceremonies also serve as a way to honor missing service members while helping younger generations understand their sacrifice.
