Robins Air Force Base offers STEM based internship at Project Synergy
The internship at Project Synergy lasts for eight weeks, and takes high school graduates and college students to teach them lessons revolving around software engineering.

WARNER ROBINS, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT)- Robins Air Force Base has an internship opportunity to teach aspiring students who are interested in STEM based topics.
The internship at Project Synergy lasts for eight weeks, and takes high school graduates and college students to teach them lessons revolving around software engineering.
“It actually got started by a group director, he had the idea to try and create a pipeline of software engineers and getting high school students into the program and into software development as early as possible so that way they can stay with that program in school and also to help them while they’re in school,” said Brian Woods, internship lead with the program.
Students learn different coding languages and work on a project that’s presented at the end of the internship. Students are also taught life skills like time management, communication skills and team work.
Interns are split into two groups: first years and second years. First years have one project, and second years are tasked with two projects.
William Van Slyke is a first year, and he expressed how helpful the program is for newcomers.
“Overall it’s an amazing experience. You don’t even have to know what coding is before you come in. Does it help get you in? Yes. But they will teach you from the ground up what you need to know to be successful.” said Van Slyke.
Second year students are learning how to program a small robot car that will react to different colored balls in a set path. The second years are also learning electrical engineering through circuitry.
Carlos Gutierreze is one of the second year students, and says he appreciates the hands on experience.
“They taught us the basics using Ohm’s Law, using logic gates, things of that nature and I previously didn’t have much experience in circuits before but through this internship I’ve just developed a true love and passion for my major.” said Gutierreze.
After students complete the internship, first years will go off to college while the second years will go back to their schools.
Current high school students in Houston and Bibb counties can find out about the program through their high school counselors.
