BYRON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – For many families, picking out a live Christmas tree is a tradition, but if you’re a first time buyer, knowing how to care for a tree can be tricky.

That’s why Robert’s Christmas Tree Farm in Byron has some tips for picking out the perfect tree and how to keep it fresh through the holiday.

Since 1978, Roberts Christmas Tree Farm has sold Christmas trees to generations of families.

With more than 50 acres of land and nearly 15,000 trees to care for year-round, farm operator Christopher Roberts says he prides himself on selling quality Christmas trees.

“Here we really kind of go over and beyond to ensure that we’re really selling a healthy product that will last through the holidays,” Roberts said.

He says picking out a Christmas tree to decorate your home with is a unique experience that’s sure to make lasting memories, but it’s important to select the right tree and know how to care for it so it can last through the season.

“You definitely don’t want a Charlie Brown or brown color tree that’s dried up and shedding needles making a big mess,” he said. “That would be a nightmare.”

Roberts says looks can be deceiving. If you’ve found a tree you like, be sure to measure its height and diameter so you’ll know if it can fit in your home.

Once you’ve set up your tree, he says be sure to water it every 24 hours with at least a gallon of lukewarm water.

“Check your water stand daily,” he said. “These things will surprise you (at) how much water they can consume over a 24-hour period.”

Keep your tree away from any direct heat source like a vent or fireplace to prevent it from drying out or catching fire.

Roberts says keeping your tree healthy can help reduce the amount of fallen pine needles and ensure it stays fresh for up to six weeks.

“Just unwind and relax,” he said. “I always encourage people not to be in a hurry, you know, run around and take your time. And just while you’re here, enjoy your time.”

Once the season is over, contact your city’s solid waste department to find out how to appropriately dispose of your tree.
