Road Block on Highway 49 to Keep Drivers Safe

Law enforcement agencies from all over Middle Georgia are stopping traffic tonight to kick off the holiday weekend. Captain Roger Hayes of the Centerville Police Department says drunk drivers are a likely find.

“It we do not see any tonight, then we’ll know we got the word out. They’ll know we have a zero tolerance policy. We warned them Tuesday, don’t do it or you will go to jail.”

One man who had a warrant out for his arrest landed in lockup tonight. The agencies are checking all cars regardless of whether they are heading north or south for intoxicated drivers, seat belt violators, children improperly buckled, and drivers in possession of drugs.

“The only reason we do these things is to save lives in Georgia,” says Captin Hayes.

This is the first of 10 intended roadblocks this summer as part of the 100 days of summer heat, a statewide initiative aimed at keeping highway drivers in check.
