Rex Heuermann Pleads Guilty To Gilgo Beach Murders, Admits To Eighth Killing

(NBC)- The man accused of being the Gilgo Beach serial killings suspect has pleaded guilty, bringing long-awaited answers to victims’ families.

Rex Heuermann, 62, admitted in court to murdering seven women and confessed to an uncharged eighth killing—that of Karen Vergata.

Prosecutors say the victims were strangled and their bodies dumped in remote areas of Long Island between 1993 and 2010.

During the hearing, a judge asked Heuermann if he was pleading guilty voluntarily.

“Yes,” he responded.

The emotional moment marked a turning point for families who have waited decades for justice. Relatives of the victims reacted in court, some breaking down in tears as the plea was entered.

Investigators say the case was ultimately solved using a combination of cell phone data and DNA evidence recovered from a discarded pizza crust, leading to Heuermann’s arrest in 2023.

Authorities later searched his home in Massapequa Park, where they say they found nearly 280 firearms, materials related to the Gilgo Beach killings, and a disturbing document allegedly outlining plans for the murders—including references to avoiding DNA evidence and selecting dump sites.

Prosecutors say Heuermann lived a double life—a New York City architect and married father of two, while allegedly carrying out the killings over nearly two decades.

His defense attorney said the guilty plea was intended to spare victims’ families from the ordeal of a trial.

Heuermann’s ex-wife and daughter were present in court and are now named in a wrongful death lawsuit alleging they should have known about the crimes. Their attorney denies those claims, saying they had no knowledge or involvement.

Authorities say Heuermann is expected to spend the rest of his life behind bars and has agreed to cooperate with the FBI’s behavioral analysis unit.
