Residents raise concerns about funding new Wilkinson County school

IRWINTON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Nearly 800 students in Wilkinson County could soon have a new school.

But, some residents have concerns about how the county will pay for it.

Wilkinson County School Superintendent Aaron Geter wants to combine middle schools students with high school students.

“We really need to move our kids into a facility that we can propel them into the 21st century, ” said Geter. “When you start talking about the infrastructure of a school whether it be in the wiring, the plumbing, the wires for the technology, all those things need to be upgraded.”

Geter said building a new school at the same location would cost less than making the necessary improvements. the new school will cost nearly 28 million dollars.

He is looking for funds from penny sales tax money, state and local funding, and corporate donations.

Dorothy Doming is a Wilkinson County resident. She has a son in the Wilkinson County School, system.

“For people like me, we can’t afford higher taxes, I mean we can barely get by now,” said Doming. “We already don’t have any jobs. You know, so where we gonna get the extra money to pay higher taxes.”

Superintendent Geter said, once he is able to secure a plan for funding the school he will officially presented the plan to the Wilkinson County School Board. If approved then, it will go before the Wilkinson County Commissioners.
If approved, construction could start as early as 2016, he added.
