Renovations unveiled for Luther Williams Field
MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – New seats, Cabana suites, and a beer garden will soon be added to Luther Williams Field.
The renovations will be funded by the $2,500,000 SPLOST project approved by the Macon-Bibb Commissioners.
Steve DeLay, Co-Owner of the new Macon baseball team, said he was waiting to tell the public about the renovations.
“This for us is a big day because we’ve been working on with the mayor, with the council for months as to how do we put all of this together, to be able to have it finalized, now be able to to tell the community, here’s what we’re doing is awesome,” DeLay said.
He gave a tour on Thursday at the field to show people what new areas would get a makeover.
The renovations will be completed in three phases.
Phase one includes improving areas of the field. The areas under phase one include:
- concessions
- seating bowl
- team store
- pre-game group picnic area
- refurbished bathroms
- rebuilt playing field and dugouts
- renovated locker rooms
Phase two will include adding new features on the third base side. These phases include:
- VIP tables
- group outings deck
- beer garden
- new concession stands
Phase three will include adding new features on the first base side. This includes:
- cabana suites
- kids play zone
- group hospitality
DeLay said the renovations will begin in October and they should be finished by May 1st, 2018.
“We think it’s really gonna be cool for the community, for something new something different and then it’s our job once they come to make sure they’re entertained, make sure they have a good time, make sure they concession lines are short, and then they’ll come back over and over again,” he said.
Mayor Robert Reichert says he’s excited about the renovations.
“I think this is going to attract people from all over Middle GA to come and see great baseball played in a historic stadium, and have all you can eat packages so that it’s affordable, family friendly, fun, and great baseball,” Reichert said.
A new field with more features also means more jobs for the community.
“We’ll probably employ another 125 to 150 additional people, concessions, ushers, ticket takers, security, and if we do other events that take place, same deal,” DeLay said.
And before you know it, umpires will be yelling play ball and you could get the best seat in the ball park.
