Record Thanksgiving travel forecast as millions take to roads and skies

(CNN) – Thanksgiving travel is officially underway, and transportation analysts say this year is shaping up to be one of the busiest holiday periods ever. Triple-A forecasts that nearly 82 million people will travel at least 50 miles from home between today and Monday — enough to break last year’s all-time record.
Aviation and transportation reporter Pete Muntean says this weekend could push airport crowds into historic territory.
“In 2025, we’ve seen eight of the top ten busiest days in TSA history,” he explained. “We’ll probably get a ninth and a tenth when this weekend comes and goes.”
According to Triple-A, almost 90 percent of travelers are expected to drive, around six million will fly, and fewer still will choose buses, trains, or cruises. The FAA predicts today will see the highest number of flights for the entire holiday stretch.
But travel experts warn that disruptions are still likely.
“Thanksgiving week and Christmas week typically do see higher disruption rates,” said Hayley Berg, lead economist for the Hopper travel app.
Some issues are already emerging. The FAA confirmed a problem with an air traffic control frequency caused a ground stop in Dallas on Tuesday. Near Seattle, a pipeline leak is limiting jet fuel supplies, forcing detours and extended flights for some passengers. One traveler said her family member had to take an unexpected extra stop in Alaska, adding hours to the trip.
As air travelers brace for delays, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy offered an unusual reminder — dress respectfully.
“Let’s try not to wear slippers and pajamas as we come to the airport,” he said, suggesting nicer attire could lead to better behavior in crowded terminals.
The holiday travel period continues through Monday, with airlines, highways, and airports preparing for another surge over the weekend.
