Record-breaking Memorial Day travel expected with 45 million people on the move
AAA estimates more than 45 million people will travel over Memorial Day weekend, setting a new record, with lower gas prices offering some relief.

(CNN)- The Memorial Day holiday period is expected to see a surge in travelers, with more than 45 million people hitting the road, air, and sea. From Thursday, May 22nd to Monday, May 26th, this year’s travel forecast is set to break a two-decade-old record.
Travel trends point to new Memorial Day record
According to AAA, the number of travelers this year will surpass the previous record set in 2005, when 44 million people ventured more than 50 miles from home during the holiday weekend. This year, the total is expected to top 45 million, setting a new milestone for Memorial Day travel.
Majority of travelers will hit the road
The majority of those traveling over Memorial Day weekend will do so by car. Fortunately for those planning a road trip, the cost of gas should provide some relief. The national average for gasoline prices is down nearly 50 cents compared to last year, making it less expensive for travelers to fill up before hitting the road.
