Razor blades, fish hook found in Walmart bakery items

(NBC)- Police in Biloxi, Mississippi are warning shoppers to check bakery items carefully after razor blades and even a fish hook were discovered inside groceries sold at local Walmart stores.

It’s a disturbing sight few people would expect to find in their food: a razor blade sticking out of a loaf of bread.

But police say that is exactly what happened multiple times this month at Walmart locations in Biloxi.

“We just have no way of knowing how many loaves of bread or items in the bakery were tampered with to begin with, and how many may have been sold and over the course of what amount of time,” said Lt. Candace Young with the Biloxi Police Department.

According to investigators, the first report came December 5th, when a customer said they found a razor blade inside a muffin purchased at a Walmart Supercenter. Three days later, police say another customer discovered a razor blade in a loaf of bread bought from a different Walmart store.

“And then it was when there was a third report at the Supercenter on December 14, where they were like, hey, this might be something,” Young said.

Police say Walmart employees then found several additional loaves of bread that appeared to have been tampered with.

“They also found another muffin that actually had a fishing hook shoved into it,” Young said.

Investigators say surveillance video helped identify a suspect. Thirty-three-year-old Camille Benson has been arrested and charged with attempted mayhem. Police say her motive remains unclear. NBC News has not been able to reach Benson for comment.

In a statement, Walmart said it removed and thoroughly inspected all potentially affected products at impacted stores in Biloxi. The company is urging customers to throw out any suspected tampered items and return to Walmart for a refund.
