Rare White Squirrels Pop Up in Warner Robins

They are very hard to find, especially in middle Georgia. But white squirrels have been seen scurrying through the trees in one Warner Robins neighborhood.

These squirrels are not albino squirrels, because they do not have the red eye characteristic of an albino. They are simply a genetic mutation which causes their fur to turn white.

Dora Etheridge has seen them around her house nearly 10 years.

“We have a lot of sunflower seeds out there for the birds, and that’s whats attracting them,” Etheridge says.

Dora’s backyard has been set up as a bird-watcher’s paradise, but now, it’s become a safe haven for white squirrels.

Dora knows of five or six that come to her yard quite frequently.

“There’s a little female down there that will come to me, for roasted pecans. If I throw them up to her, she’ll come running. She’s starting to recognize me.”

Walking through the neighborhood, Dora keeps a close eye on her beloved squirrels, making sure to protect them by whatever means possible.

“I’ve asked the mayor and city council to consider making Warner Robins a white squirrel sanctuary. And that white squirrels have a right of way in the roads at all times,” Dora jokes.
