Putnam officials investigating decapitation, possible abduction

EATONTON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Putnam County officials are investigating a murder and possible abduction after a man’s body was found decapitated. That’s according to Deputy Coroner Marcus Turner.

Turner says, although it’s not confirmed, officials have every reason to believe the decapitated body is that of 88-year-old Russel Dermond.

Deputies also added friends of the Dermond’s found the body believed to be Dermond inside his home in the Great Waters Community on Lake Oconee.

His 87-year-old wife, Shirley Dermond, was not home when the body was discovered, and officials believe she may have been abducted.

She’s described as 5 feet 2 inches tall, and weighs around 150 pounds. She has grey hair and blue eyes.

Putnam County Coroner Gary McElhenney says Russell Dermond died from a traumatic
brain injury.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office at area code 706-485-8557.
