Putnam County deputy shot responding to domestic call
Deputy Barak Wood was among the deputies, who responded to a domestic dispute call, from a Crooked Creek Road home in Eatonton, Wednesday around 8 p.m., according to Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills.
A woman called 911 and said her daughter was baby sitting a two-year-old child at the home, when the baby’s father, identified as Donovan Ray Dann refused to allow her leave.
Sheriff Sills said 23-year-old Dann, is the ex-boyfriend of the babysitter, Jessica Tanner. Tanner is not the child’s mother, he added.
Once deputies arrived at the house, they watched as Dann ran out of the back door.
“The deputy ordered him to stop, but the man turned around and fired two shots at the deputy,” said Sills.
Deputy Wood was hit by shot gun pellets “bird shots”, near his right eye, right shoulder, and in the hand. Wood, still has pellets in his eye socket, said Sills.
“The deputy returned fire,” continued Sills, who added Dann then ran into near by woods.
Dann held the deputies at bay for more than an hour, until around 9:25 p.m., after Sheriff Sills sent a voice mail and text message to his cell phone, asking the suspect to give himself up.
“The suspect emerged from the woods and surrendered,” said the sheriff. Dann was unarmed at the time of his arrest. Deputies are unsure where the shot gun is he used in the shooting.
He turned himself into Baldwin County Sheriff Bill Massee and Putnam County Deputy Tony Frazier.
Dann was arrested and charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer, aggravated assault and cruelty to children.
The suspect’s second aggravated assault stems from striking the baby sitter Jessica Tanner in the head with the shot gun, said Sills.
