Push for Citywide Recycling Stalls in Committee

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – A resolution that would have brought curbside recycling to the entire city is pushed back.

The Public Works and Engineering Committee voted 4-1 Tuesday to table the item.  Councilman Rick Hutto voted to keep the item up for discussion.

The resolution, which was sponsored by councilwoman Beverly Olson, acknowledged the city’s pilot recycling program has had good participation and also said the citywide service has been offered in the past.

Hutto lives in one of the two neighborhoods that currently offers the service.

“We do recycle very strongly there, so I thought that it would be good for us to at least look at expanding it to the rest of the city,” he said.

Committee members weren’t necessarily against the resolution; they just felt it was too close to consolidation to pursue it.  The city merges with Bibb County in January.

Hutto said citizens can still participate in the city’s secondary recycling program, located at Macon Iron.  Proceeds from there benefit the Youth Actors’ Company at Theatre Macon.
