(NBC)- President Donald Trump is marking his 100th day in office today with a rally in Michigan, a key 2024 battleground state and major hub for the auto industry — one that’s feeling the impact of his sweeping tariff policies. While tariffs on imported vehicles remain, Trump officials say the administration plans to reduce some fees on foreign auto parts used in vehicles assembled in the U.S. The move comes as just 39% of Americans say they approve of the president’s tariff policies, according to a new NBC News/Stay Tuned poll.
“We’re going to make a lot of money,” Trump said during the rally, dismissing recent polling, even as his overall approval rating hovers at 45%.
Democrats were quick to criticize his first 100 days. “It’s been a hundred days of hell for American families,” said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY).
On immigration, the administration touts a 95% drop in illegal border crossings in March compared to the same time last year. “We are the most secure border in the history of this nation,” said Trump’s Border Czar Tom Homan.
Controversy continues over deportation practices. The administration has faced backlash after deporting undocumented mothers along with their U.S. citizen children — including a four-year-old boy reportedly sent to Honduras without his cancer medication.
Homan defended the removals, saying the children were taken at the mothers’ request: “This was a parental decision.”
However, migrant advocates strongly disagree. “The moms did not feel that they had any choice,” said Sirine Shebaya, Executive Director of the National Immigration Project. “They were simply told that their U.S. citizen children were going with them.”
