President Jimmy Carter stops in Sandersville while on the campaign trail

SANDERSVILLE, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – With exactly one week left until Election Day, a big name in politics visited a Sandersville restaurant to support democratic candidates Michelle Nunn and Jason Carter.

President Jimmy Carter stopped by The Country Buffet while on the campaign trail to show support for U.S. Senate candidate Nunn and his grandson, who is running for governor. A huge crowd of people packed the inside of the restaurant and stood outside, all hoping to catch a glimpse of the former president.

President Carter, along with family members from both Nunn and Carter’s campaigns, spoke to the crowd about the importance of getting out and voting during this election.

The former president told the audience there is tremendous potential in Georgia, but the state is going downhill. He says Georgia’s unemployment rate is the highest in the nation and the education system is in bad shape.

“These are the kinds of things that need to be changed,” President Carter said. “And it can be changed if we change the leadership in Georgia.”

While in Sandersville, President Carter also helped cut the ribbon for the new Washington County Democratic Committee Headquarters.

Early voting ends on Friday, October 31st. Election Day is Tuesday, November 4th.
