Preparations underway for 42nd International Cherry Blossom Festival

MACON, Georgia (41NBC/WMGT) – Preparations are underway for the 42nd Annual Cherry Blossom Festival, and excitement is building as vendors get ready for the big 10-day event.
A lot of work is going on behind the scenes at Carolyn Crayton Park to make sure everything is in place before the festival begins.
Jim Drew, the midway ride operator, says safety is their top priority. If there is ever a worry about the machines at the festival, safety comes first.
“They all know they all have the authority that nobody’s going to be upset with you,” he said. “And no matter what you see, if you hear anything, it doesn’t matter. Shut it down and come get us.”
This year, there will be three new rides at the festival, including the Jumping Kangaroo Ride, which is perfect for younger children. Riders must be 36 inches. The ride goes in a circle and jumps like a kangaroo, Drew said.
For those who are not big on rides, there are plenty of other things to enjoy at the festival, including performances, games and food.
Brian Gillette, co-owner of Gillette’s Pizza and Lemonade, says preparation for this festival is a big undertaking that takes about a year, but he says it’s all worth it.
“Come out,” he said. “Enjoy the festivities, the blossoms, enjoy the rides, the food, the games, come out and see everybody.”
