(CNN)- Search-and-rescue efforts are underway in Venezuela after two powerful earthquakes left widespread destruction across Caracas and surrounding areas.
The quakes caused buildings to collapse, cracked walls and left many residents trapped beneath rubble.
One affected resident described the moments after the shaking stopped.
“All the walls were cracked, we managed to open the door, however we could,” said Maria Alejandra. “There was a cloud of smoke that wouldn’t let us see. And when we went downstairs, the scene was like a horror movie.”
Many people remain missing as crews continue searching damaged buildings for survivors.
For Venezuelans living abroad, the disaster has brought fear and uncertainty as they wait for updates from loved ones.
“It’s hard not being able to do anything or get news about your family,” said Kimberly Valderrama, a Venezuelan living in Madrid. “Your hands are tied when you’re here.”
Volunteers are distributing food and other supplies to residents impacted by the disaster.
The United States is among the countries providing assistance. The State Department announced $150 million in aid for Venezuela, including search-and-rescue support.
“We’re already deploying search and rescue teams from Fairfax County, Virginia and Los Angeles,” said U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. “That’s the most immediate need right now.”
Venezuela’s interim president Delcy Rodríguez said the government is focused on quickly coordinating emergency operations to protect lives and help affected families.
Community leaders say the devastation has left many people in shock.
“Everybody is just completely devastated,” said Melina Garcia, founder and executive director of United Children’s Music Project.
Rescue crews continue working through the rubble as officials assess the full extent of the damage.
