Post Office Offers Green Programs to Help Ease Holiday Shipping

For many of you it’s time to start shipping those holiday gifts which can mean a long wait at the post office, but the Postal Service is working to keep you out of the long lines. It’s just one of the Postal Services many green initiatives.

“It’s very important for the postal service to reduce our footprint on the environment,” says Shipping Specialist Robin Dessau.

The post office recycled more than 220,000 tons of mail last year, and uses cradle-to-cradle packaging, which is recycled material and bio-degradable.

The post office is also working to cut down on long lines, especially with holiday shipping underway.

Dessau says, “Instead of driving to the post office and using your time and your money to come and stand in line the Postal Service…we come to you.”

In just an easy click you can print labels, pay for postage, and arrange for free pick-up from your house. Plus, using the online service gives you free tracking and shipping discounts.

Another way the post office is going green is by creating a fuel efficient fleet of mail delivery trucks. So far the fleet includes 44,000 vehicles.

Postal Service workers say in order for packages to arrive by Christmas send them out by December 15th.
